Never Can Say Goodbye

September 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

It’s been a while!

I want to apologize to everyone who’s been checking back to see if there were any updates since the announced hiatus of the blog. I originally planned to update once everyone was set and had at least three separate interviews lined up and ready to go. Unfortunately, that’s not the case! These are hard times, and I know I have trouble having money for transportation. Stealing out of my little brother’s piggy bank can only get me so far, not to mention the fact that it’s kind of fucked up to do so (and I know all of you with younger siblings have done the same). I also want to thank everyone for checking back to see if there were any updates, and I want to thank everyone who’s encouraged me to keep the blog going. I was honestly going to let it fade and move on to another project. All of you made me realize that I should keep this going, and I’m more than happy to oblige.

Stories About Nothing

August 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I realize that I’m kind of late on this, just a tad bit, but Intuition’s “Stories About Nothing” is a really good album. I was at the laundromat today trying to get my clothes clean and my iPod shuffled onto one of the songs on the album. Now, when I received a copy of the album, I didn’t really give it a detailed listen, so I was really impressed when I started to really pay attention to the words of the song. So, naturally, I had to go back and listen to the whole album again. There’s just something about his voice and enunciation that kind of bothers me, and there are these moments where I just want to breathe for him, but otherwise it’s a pretty dope album. Again, I was thoroughly impressed! Equilibrium is always on point with his beats, it seems, and the two are really good. Like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Intuition’s style of rap and Equilibrium’s sound just go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Here’s a few of my favorite tracks.
Story To Tell – Chill intro. I was totally vibing to all two minutes and forty-four seconds of it. & I think Intuition’s favorite phrase is “Oh, shucks” lol.
Forget Today – I feel like this song is describing my best friend, minus the “coked up & sunburned” part. The character of this song, whether it’s Intuition’s autobiographical take or not, reminds me of your average empty-hearted guy who searches for a purpose while not really accepting the fact that he’s a grown man. I’m pretty sure everyone’s been through this before, where they feel like everyday’s just routine, not wanting to accept the fact that you have to “act your age”, whatever that means. I know I’ve been through it before. Glad I’ve gotten over it.
Outside – I absolutely love this song. It’s about a waitress who works at a diner to support herself and her three kids, and it starts off by describing how her life was from her twenties to the “present”. By the way Intuition executes his bars, you can tell that she’s had it bad and even worse when the customers looks down on her for being a waitress. This song made me feel bad for every person I’ve looked down on because of their job–we’re all guilty of this, no matter how much of an understanding and compassionate person we are. It’s a beautifully tragic story and I’m absolutely hooked. “Because there’s only so much that a woman can take/before she bends over backwards and eventually break/so next time you notice something you don’t appreciate/take a step back to notice your mistake.”
Fix Her Up Her ft. Nocando – Lowkey, I think Nocando is starting to become one of my favorite rappers (Nocan, I’m still waiting on you to give me a copy of the Impatient EP!). Anyway, This song…everyone can relate to this song. Destructive relationship? Push and pull? Deteriorating feelings? Why bother to fix it, right? “The ferris wheel goes up and down/pitiful pouts when the other so much as frowns/his head’s in the sky/her feet touch the ground/and they both wonder when the other’s gonna come around/it goes hook up/hang up/hold up/wait/one comes too early/one shows up late/and there’s no real way they can cope today/but they both think fate’s gonna hold their place.” and “I bet your damn hands have callouses/from holding onto the granite skin of the man you miss/let me ask you this/do you sit with your head in your hands (???)/wondering what you used to do is tattooed (???)/If our relationship was a house we wouldn’t know where the bathroom is/we lay waste where we have to live.”
Bye Bye Baby – A fond farewell to our younger days! This joint had me reminiscing over my own childhood. “Goodbye to all the good times and bad times and sad times I’ve had as a (baby!).”
Coming Home – Dope interlude? Pretty much.
Pain & Pleasure – Story of hard lives and turning points. Intuition’s a pretty good storyteller.
Paint the Dawn – “We’re all blessed with different problems but cursed with the same ego.”
Well, these songs basically come one after the other, and I reallly like every song on this album, but for sake of time I’m only talking about a few tracks. I give this album an 8.5 out of 10! If you don’t have a copy, go get one as soon as possible!
And the Bar Exam!
I won’t be there, since I’ll be in Atlanta until the 22nd, and I’m kind of bummed that I’ll miss it and have to wait until the footage comes out on YouTube. Cadalak Ron vs Celestial? Rheteric Ramirez vs. L. Scatterbrain? Interesting match-ups I’ll totally be missing! Plus a live perfomance by Thirsty Fish? I’m just missing out left and right! But on the other hand, I’ll be at Battle of the Bay 5 up in Oakland, so stay tuned for coverage (and possibly an interview).

Oh, and if you want to learn more about him, check out the interview I did of him a few months back.

Jheli Beam!

June 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Okay, so, I’m not going to bother bullshitting you guys with this one.
I’ve honestly been avoiding the review of Jheli Beam because I have no clue as to what Busdriver talks about in his songs. I’ll be lying to you guys and myself if I acted like I know just what the heck Busdriver says half the time. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Busdriver is amazing, and I have much respect for him as an artist, but most of his songs just zoom past my understanding. It’s something I love about his music, albeit the fact that it frustrates me to the point of…frustration. He’s abstract to me, and I can’t really grasp the meanings/stories behind the song. Maybe it’s because I’m trying too hard, or maybe there’s nothing to get. Either way, I don’t get it, and I love it all the same. Besides, just because I don’t understand his lyrics doesn’t mean I’m unable to appreciate it. Ya dig?
So, Jheli Beam was released on June 9th and it’s Busdriver’s eighth album (I think). I’ve been listening to it a week or two in advance since I came across a promo copy. On the packaging it said that it was supposed to drop on June 29th, but I guess the date got pushed forward. Anyway, on we go!
Split Second (Between Nannies and Swamis): I absolutely love the way the song starts out. It’s so raw, and the whole “Conscious rap failed us” bit just flows. Then the classical piano bit just plays and Busdriver raps on it; CLASSIC. “Imaginary Places” is the first song I’ve ever heard of his, and that bit just brought me back to that. The ambient feel of the beat is great too. It’s like a mash of classical, ambient & raw sounds. & I love the way Busdriver flows; so matter-of-factly, you know? That’s just his steez.
Me-Time (With The Pulmonary Paalimpsets): OH MY GOD, MOZART’S “TURKISH MARCH”! This song is “Imaginary Places” all over again. This is the reason why I love Busdriver; he does things that just blows people’s mind away, musically. Busdriver can really chop it up. He’s crazy, and I fucking LOVE him. Towards the end it kind of gets a little weird, but if you can bare the minute he spends repeating “ME-TIME” over and over again, it ends pretty well. Kinda leaves you wanted for more, though.
Handfuls of Sky: This song kind of reminds me of classic rock with the guitar riffs going on in the background and the vocalizing. I have no clue about what he’s talking about, but it’s just so pleasing to listen to the ingenius cadence of Busdriver. I love it when he sings! Plus, it’s a dope title. “Handfuls of Sky”? Pft, I want some.
Scoliosis Jones: This song is really weird to me. But it’s cool because the beat accelerates and dies down throughout the whole song, and Busdriver raps according to the tempo. IT’S EFFIN’ GREAT!
Least Favorite Rapper: This track features NoCanDo, and it is my favorite song. The beat is hard, the lines are hard, the freaking theme is hard. It’s DOPE. Check these lines out: “These sneaker-geek MCs to me is so brokeback/So fuck sexy in 09 I’m bringing broke back/Your favorite rapper’s brawny wearing the french braided hair shred/My bank account’s been scrawny since it was a tenth grader’s (something something)”, “Your favorite rapper is extravagant aside from his pompous name/He’s like a nursery with more cribs than John McCain/Your favorite dude champions every Chicago city slum/from his condominium while brandishing his implausible mini-gun.” and “Your favorite rapper’s got Alzheimers/Repeats himself like an old timer/He works harder than a gold miner/When it comes to picking ghost writers.” THAT IS A HARD ASS LINE. This whole song just challenges your tastes in music while ramming a steel rod up the ass of your wack ass favorite rapper. WOOHOO!
Quebec and Back: Catchy ass tune for a song that’s beyond my comprehension. I will one day learn this song and be able to sing it verbatim. I love the vocal effects (no, it’s not autotune).
Do the Wop: The beat makes me want to dance, no joke. Then Busdriver comes in with his sophisticated vocab and almost schizophrenic flow. Me, I do the wop with no dance license, bitch.
World Agape: I have no idea what Art Rap is, but it’s so cute when he blows a rasberry in the intro, hahaha. I feel like the beat is just everywhere though, no structer. Maybe that’s the point, but it’s kind of distracting!
Manchuria: Featuring Myka9! I love Myka9, and their voices surprisingly go well together. I don’t really understand this song, however. (Surprise, surprise) The beat is freaking hard, though. I hear the Asian influence(?) to the beat. I LIKE!
Unsafe Sextet/Gilded Hearts of Booklovers: Again, I love the beat. I can’t really describe it.
Happy Insider: Featuring Nick Thornburn. His voice sounds ethreal. I just heard a Beatles reference aaaaaand got lost again, haha. But the beat kind of reminds me of HelloGoodbye.
I’ve Always Known: Another beat that reminds me of HelloGoodbye with a fucking kick ass beat. AND PROJECT BLOWED TRIBUTE!
Fishy Face: Featuring John Dietrich. This song sounds so cute! Really really remniscent of HelloGoodbye beats. Can I make that fishy face, that kissy face?
Sorry. Fuckers: Humorous. Club anthems, and he’s gonna give it a go (:
So, these are my opinions on the album! Overall I give it a 8.5 out of 10. GET IT!

Music For Dope Runs

June 12, 2009 · 3 Comments

This dime piece of an album was released last August, 2008. It had no major distribution, and it was a lowkey compilation of works between LushOne and PhillipDrummond with a lot of literary and cultural references. There wasn’t much buzz until now, and this was actually a project that the two artists started in 2005. LushOne, as you know, is a well-known rap battler and the president of GrindTime West Coast, and Phillip Drummond was also part of the battle scene. They lived a few blocks apart and decided to paint a timeless picture.

I don’t know much about Phillip Drummond (yet), but LushOne was born in Los Angeles, and divided his time between the Bay Area and the good old 213-310 area codes. It’s Cali!

The Buzz EP.

June 5, 2009 · 2 Comments

Both Intuition and VerBS are probably tired of the FELT comparisons various blogs have written about them and their decision to come together for a project. Honestly, I don’t blame these writers for alluding this duo for the better-known harmony of ebony and ivory; a lot, if not all, of the songs on the EP are remniscent to the musical styles of both MURS and Slug (the pair that makes up FELT, if you guys didn’t know). Of course, they bring their own flavor into these said styles, and it’s what differentiates VerBS from MURS, and Intuition from Slug.

Intuition met VerBS in 2006 at Project Blowed when Customer Service was doing a show at the function that’s located on 43rd and Leimert. Intuition noticed VerBS since they were wearing the same outfit (them both being American Apparel addicts), and the next few times they would cross paths, it would always be the case. What I like most about these two coming together is the fact that neither of them ever saw themselves coming together like this; The Buzz EP was on some pure spontaneous shit!

The Buzz EP was officially released on May 30th (the day of The Bar Exam), and has been availiable for a free dowload since June 1st. I actually posted the image link that led you guys to the free download; I hope you guys have been abusing that! It’s a really cool and mellow listen, and I can see myself bumping this EP a lot during the summer (which won’t officially begin for me until June 11th).

bad habits, relapse and the hundreds?

May 24, 2009 · 3 Comments

Hey guys!

I hope you’re all enjoying the Intuition interview I posted on Friday; I’m listening to the Stories About Nothing album he gave me right now and I’m thinking about how I should’ve used a song from there instead of “Really”, which will be in the Buzz EP. I mean, it still makes sense since the Buzz EP’s going to be released soon, but it just would’ve been better since it’s an interview with Intuition, not Intuition and VerBS, you know?

I’m too critical of my own work.

Anyway, I find myself smoking way too many cigarettes (again) whenever I’m just relaxing in between classes, or right after I finish eating a meal, or whatever. I mean, okay. I started smoking when I was fourteen (surprise, surprise) and was a heavy smoker at a point. Then I completely stopped during my junior and senior years; I went completely cold turkey on those cancer sticks. After a good while, I picked the habit up again when I started CSULA, but I would only smoke at parties (alcohol and cigarettes just go so well together). Now, I’d be smoking half a pack everyday if I bought my own supply. It’s so bad. I need to stop, or at least just smoke whenever I’m drinking.

DUMBFOUNDEAD

May 15, 2009 · 4 Comments

Where do I even begin with Dumbfoundead?

I admit that I only found out about him recently (winter of last year?) through a friend named Sixto. Him and I were waiting outside for another friend, Geoff, to finish class so we could go home from school. While waiting and surfing around on the internet outside the Salazar Hall patio of CSULA, talking about the recent music we were bumping, artists we were into, and Korean hip hop, Sixto asked, “Oh, have you ever heard of Dumbfoundead?”

“Dumbfoundead?” I repeated, a bit thrown off. Raising an eyebrow, I asked, “No…who’s that?”

Taking my laptop from my hands, Sixto pulled up a YouTube video while he said, “Just watch; I think you’d like him. His deliverance and his voice is so dope!”

I laughed and replied, “Damn, your man-crush or what, fool?”

We ended up not being able to watch the video, due to the fact that the school’s wireless connection is total shit (blame the budget cuts), so guess what I did as soon as I got home: watch the video of Dumbfoundead’s Grind Time battle Sixto suggested. My curiosity got the better of me!

The video I watched was the battle between Dumbfoundead and Illusion-Z, and as soon as I saw who Dumbfoundead was, I called Sixto exclaiming, “You didn’t tell me he was Korean!”

As corny as it sounds, I was amazed. It’s not everyday you come across Asian-American cats who are in the rap game. I was even more impressed because Dumbfoundead seriously served the shit out of Illusion-Z; that battle had me laughing in tears. Curious to see if he had anymore battles, I searched around and came across a number of videos. I sat there watching his battle with The Saurus, his WRC battles, and the random civilian recorded videos they had of him. Then I came across his battle with Tantrum, and goddamn. That did it. I developed a crush on Dumbfoundead through videos of him on YouTube. So much for me making fun of Sixto, right?

A few days later, I went over Sixto’s house. Knowing about my appreciation for Dumbfoundead (which was something short of groupie-love hahaha), he hooked it up with Super Barrio Bros., Ocean’s 11 Mixtape, and everything Project Blowed. (Dude, seriously, good looking out Six because that shit impacted my musical preferences.) I was on that Super Barrio Bros. and the Ocean’s 11 Mixtape for a good while; I actually still listen to it quite a lot.

My video editing skills are getting better (:

Now, as you all know, today is the official release of Dumbfoundead’s Fun with Dumb. I don’t know about you guys, but I was really anticipating the release of this album ever since Dumbfoundead told me he was working on it when I met him at Paid Dues. My anticipation grew more and more because he was just changing up on everything! It was first going to be an EP, then he said he was going to drop it mid to late April, then early May, then he said it’s a full length album… I was like, “Dude, when is it going to drop????” I wanted it in my hands really bad; I honestly think Dumb did it on purpose, hahahaha.

I don’t know how it happened (it was on that random-tip), but I was over Dumbfoundead’s place and spent more time there than I ever did at my own house. He was still working on the album and I saw things that go on behind the scenes; there’s a lot of effort and a lot of heart that goes into any musician’s work, and seeing all that made me appreciate musicians a lot more. I was there to see the recording, mixing, mastering, album work, and even packaging! It’s a lot of work and a lot of fun (: That made me want the album even more, listening to all the songs in its rawest form.

Dumbfoundead hooked it up with an advance copy of Fun with Dumb which I am currently bumping, and it’s fucking great! It’s an album composed of fourteen tracks with five more bonus songs. Here’s a little review, track by track.

Taken by my phone; both of my cameras are out on loan right now.

Intro: I love the intro. It’s cute and fun! (No pun intended, haha)

Night Riders: I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG. Seriously, ever since Dumbfoundead uploaded this song onto his MySpace, I would go to his page just to listen to it. I love how he gives a shout out to every part of LA county (LA ALL DAY, BITCH) The beat, the lyrics, the cadence, the deliverance, they’re all on point. I would say this is one of my favorite tracks on the album, hands down. Favorite line? I have quite a few. Ride past MacArthur Park and Lafayette/Can’t remember the last time I caught my breath/This city got my back/K-Town across my chest and It may cause dyslexia/Pass by two girls/Which broad is sexier?/One has no ass/Where’s the rest of her?/The other I get the digits from/I’ll be texting her/Yell out ‘Best of luck’ then keep riding on/Iron Lungs pedaling/Got my sneaks flying off. There’s moreee, but if I write them all down, I might as well write all the lyrics, haha. And I love the chorus. The chorus is fucking banging.

Rapper-O’s: Definitely a humorous song. This is like a diss to all the wack “rappers” out there who shouldn’t really even be considered rappers.

Cockblockers: If you’ve seen one of the videos I’ve posted on the blog before, you’d know that this is definitely going to fall under my favorites. I love this song. This song makes me laugh. Especially the part where he throws the fat friend a biscuit. LMFAO

1st, 2nd, And 3rd: I really, really, really love the beat, and what the overall song is about. Favorite line? Your first offense/Shouldn’t have been there in the first place/And your first friend/Who’s always been there in the worst case. It reminded me of some shit that happened to me last August, and fucking Yeselyn and Noah were the first friends who came into mind. Damn, those were some good times.

Fun With Zo: OMG. THIS TRACK IS GENIUS. DJ Zo is fucking great. I’m envious of his scratching skills. I’m not going to say anymore on this track because you guys have to listen to it.

Favorite Song: This was actually the song Dumbfoundead was working on when I first hung out at his place. It’s hella catchy and kid-friendly; it makes me smile because it’s just so cute! That Ren & Stimpy sample’s fucking dope too, hahaha.

She’s Built: All I’m going to say is that I will never think of Home Improvement and power tools the same way again. (:

Bullets of Truth: Did you guys see the video for this? Fuck, dude, that shit is on point. It’s a fucking hard ass song.

Let’s Smoke: Funny ass interlude. I didn’t know Alpha MC could sing until I heard him record this, hahaha.

She Don’t Care: Dumb actually rerecorded this song, and honestly, I really like it. I know it word for word (thanks to me bumping Ocean’s 11 so much, haha).

One Day: ONE OF MY FAVORITES. The beat is so hard, and everyone’s voices and styles just go very well together.

Here Comes Trouble: Here comes trouble!!!!!! One of my favorite tracks. Me and Trouble had the same relationship for a good part of my life, hahahaha.

Outro: Classic.

She Don’t Care Remix: It’s “She Don’t Care” over Lupe’s “Paris, Tokyo” beat with verses from NoCanDo and Intuition. I’ll probably memorize this song too, hahaha.

Junior College: Fuck Asher Roth’s “I Love College”. Honestly, ever since I heard this, I recite the words to this song whenever I hear “I Love College”. I find it wayyyyy more relateable.

Blue Ball Blues: BLUUUUUUUUUE BAAAAAAAAAAAALLS! Girls are such teases, (:

K-Town Story: I know this song word for word. Fucking dope ass take on Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story”.

Dumbfoundead vs. Tantrum: This is the audio version of Dumbfoundead’s first (and most viewed) Grind Time battle. Looooooove it!

I’m telling you, COP THE ALBUM. You can purchase it through this site: http://dumbfoundead.blogspot.com. I’ll actually be selling it also sometime next week, so if you see me around, you know what to do.
